SOREDI and local angel investors have launched the Southern Oregon Startup Challenge, a Q1 2021 competition among Rogue Valley companies. This challenge may result in up to (3) $20,000 investments. This collaboration is made possible thanks to SOREDI's partnership with the Oregon Technology Business Center (OTBC) and its Rural Oregon Startup Challenge initiative. This is a 3-year program supported in part by the Economic Development Administration, Ford Family Foundation, and the Oregon Community Foundation.
Keep in mind that while $20,000 is hoped to be the minimal investment for the Southern Oregon Startup Challenge, the actual investment may be more or less depending on the number of investors participating. The Southern Oregon Angel Investment Network’s most recent investment in an Ashland startup was $1.5 million. Four earlier investments averaged approximately $255,000 each.
Mind to Market (M2M) is the platform in which Rogue Valley startups and existing companies may upload applications for their prospective commercially-viable and scalable business ventures. M2M is an already proven successful venture, affiliated with Startup Spokane. M2M’s collaboration with SOREDI and the Southern Oregon Angel Investment Network is an efficient vehicle for SOREDI and investors to receive applications and ultimately make capital investments in Southern Oregon startups and/or existing companies who need expansion capital.
Business plans may be submitted up until January 31, 2021. Viable start-up applicants may be asked to present to angel investors at a virtual event on Wednesday, February 17. Investors will then choose up to three companies for up to three investments to be made no later than March 30, 2021.
All submitting companies will have access to a Virtual Incubation Program (VIP), an interactive educational program developed the OTBC. VIP is an eight-week program tailor-made for startups. In addition, collaboration with the OTBC will provide additional connections for local entrepreneurs to statewide support resources and investors outside the region.
