Former New Far East Restaurant Approved for Remodel

Published on April 08, 2026, by the City of Medford:

The Landmarks and Historic Preservation Commission approved a commercial remodel of the former New Far East restaurant following a public hearing on April 7.

The project, called Jay’s on 4th, was submitted by Jesse Nunez. The building, constructed in the late 1940s and located at 236 N. Front Street in downtown Medford, is within the Historic Preservation Overlay and subject to Historic Review standards.

The applicant plans multiple food and beverage outlets under a single owner, with at least three distinct concepts produced in one shared kitchen.

The remodel includes partial expansion and renovations, including reconfigured dining and service areas, upgraded restrooms, and a new outdoor courtyard.

Site improvements include parking adjustments, new entrance paving, planters, bicycle parking, and a new cantilevered entrance canopy. A mural location near the main entrance was also approved.

The concrete block building began as Luman Grocery Store in 1948 and was designed by a prominent local architect. It became the Colony Club restaurant in 1965 and was remodeled in 1974 for the Far East restaurant.
