Craig Breon reported for Ashland.news that Ashland City Council has set in place plans to include denser development areas “to reduce our dependency on automobiles, adapt to climate change, and provide a greater amount of multi-family and affordable housing, while striving to provide spaces for commercial and small-scale industrial uses.”
Partially in response to the state mandate to address Oregon’s low ranking in meeting its goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), and also because Ashland is a forward-thinking community and supportive of the state’s 2022 Climate Friendly and Equitable Communities program (CFEC).
Ashland was the first city in Oregon to submit and have approved four Climate Friendly Areas (CFAs) to the state. The criteria that qualifies an area to be CFA is in three categories – largely undeveloped land, underdeveloped land, and near fully developed land. Croman Mill. Railroad Property, and Triangle Property have been identified as potential locations. The downtown area has also been identified as a secondary consideration.
Public participation for the CFAs has been put into motion and will be forthcoming.
