Hunter Communications

Keeping the Rogue Valley Connected

Hunter Communications is a local telecommunications company founded in 1994 and located in Central Point.  While Hunter started as a construction company over 25 years ago, they have expanded to offer fiber-optic internet and voice services to local governments and businesses throughout Southern Oregon.  Most recently, Hunter has made their award-winning fiber-optic internet available to residential customers. Hunter’s fiber network has enhanced economic opportunities in the community by providing more jobs and improving the local telecommunications infrastructure.

The demand for fiber-optic internet has created technology, construction, and customer service jobs at Hunter.  Their workforce has experienced substantial growth, increasing by 40% in 2021.

Covering over 2,000 miles, Hunter’s fiber-optic network stretches from Seattle to San Jose.  As they continue to expand their infrastructure, the company will add more jobs throughout Southern Oregon. By the end of 2022, Hunter expects to increase their headcount by 30%.  “We are working strategically to make Oregon a hub for telecommunications and fiber talent,” said Carey Cahill, Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

There are career opportunities in each department including science and technology jobs in both the Network Operations and Engineering departments.  “We want to create local jobs in STEM for our young people.  They can stay here at home and build a career in Engineering or IT,” remarked Cahill who is also a local resident of Medford.

A high-speed internet connection is necessary for participation in modern life, society, and economy.  Hunter’s growth has helped communities throughout Southern Oregon improve their access to faster and more reliable internet.  Cahill stated, “Hunter is committed to improving the availability of fiber to both unserved and underserved communities.  For us, that means offering high-speed fiber internet to residential customers at a price for life without contracts.”

With their new fiber to the home initiative, Hunter has made fiber-optic internet available to neighborhoods throughout Jackson and Josephine Counties. “Our service gives people the opportunity to work from home.  With an increasingly remote work force, our fiber-optic solution provides a seamless connection in home offices,” said Cahill.

Hunter also continues to provide state of the art business internet and fiber-powered voice services to both small businesses and large enterprises.

The company also supplies telecommunications to several local government and community entities throughout Southern Oregon including the Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport, the Jackson County Expo, the Craterian Theater, and the Britt Music and Arts Festival.

As the company continues to develop its network throughout the state, Hunter’s efforts spark business development.  Research shows that enhancing local communications infrastructure leads to more new businesses and decreases unemployment rates. Also, a study from the World Bank estimates that a 10% increase in broadband penetration can increase GDP per capita by 1.2%.

“The fiber broadband and advanced voice technology we provide empowers our communities by giving both residents and businesses the tools they need to thrive in a connected world,” Cahill said.
