The basis for any strong community is the health of its people, and for more than 100 years, Providence has continued to bring a robust wellness strategy to the Rogue Valley through its values of dignity, compassion, justice, excellence, and integrity. High touch converges with high tech to make Providence in southern Oregon a remarkable organization for patients, employees, and our community.

From its beginnings in 1856, even before Oregon had become a state, Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart and four other Sisters of Providence brought their values of hard work, faith, and responsiveness to the pioneer populations of Vancouver, Washington. In 1911, three Sisters of Providence carried on this mission to build Sacred Heart Hospital at Nob Hill, Siskiyou Heights. More than just a place to treat patients, the hospital was the first training school for nurses in Southern Oregon. Over the years, the hospital has grown, changed, and moved to new buildings, becoming one of the largest providers of health services in the region. At Providence Medford Medical Center and its related facilities in the Rogue Valley, 1,700 caregivers provide support during 309,000 visits each year. They continue to carry out their Mission: “As expressions of God’s healing love, witnessed through the ministry of Jesus, we are steadfast in serving all, especially those who are poor and vulnerable.”

In addition to providing health care solutions, Providence supports the Southern Oregon community through financial and in-kind contributions. For example, in early 2018, Providence provided $50,000 to Kids Unlimited of Oregon, an after-school program for elementary and middle school children to connect them with certified teachers and aides for homework assistance.

The future of Providence is bright. The doors of Providence Stewart Meadows Medical Plaza recently opened to provide primary care, urgent care, sports medicine, and laboratory and imaging services to the community. Quality health care extends beyond brick and mortar to technology solutions as well. Providence has invested in leading-edge technology that allows people to access care right from their mobile devices. To continue to bring world-class service to our community, Providence partners with higher education to provide a nurse residency program and other technical health care training programs – carrying on the traditions of the founding Sisters.
