Jackson County payroll employment increased by 1,200 jobs in September. Start of school year increases in local government education totaling 1,360 accounted for much of the month’s gain. Retail trade continued to gain jobs in advance of the holiday season, up by 280 jobs. Private educational and health service employment rose by 190 over the month, with 70 of the gain in the health care and social assistance component and the remainder in private educational services. Employment declined in a few private sector industries. Manufacturing lost 60 jobs in September and financial activities shed 30 jobs. Business and professional services lost 140 jobs over the month and was essentially unchanged over the year. This is in contrast to the trend statewide, where this industry is among the fastest growing since September 2015. The largest drop was estimated in leisure and hospitality, down by 180 jobs; most of the decline was in accommodations and food services. Government employment had a net gain of 1,060 jobs over the month. The aforementioned increase in local government education was countered by declines in federal (-20) and state government (-160).
